Intellectual Property Policy Development Workshop II

About the Workshop

Institutions of higher learning as well as Research Centres involved in various forms of commercialization need effective intellectual property (IP) management policies to provide the structure and an appropriate environment for win-win exploitation of the IP and cultivate linkages with industry.
World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) defines the institutional IP policy as a formally adopted document, which:

  1. Clarifies the ownership of and right to use the IP resulting from the institution’s own or collaborative R&D activities
  2. Sets out the rules of the institution on how to accurately identify, evaluate, protect and manage IP for its further development, usually through some form of commercialization
  3. Provides a transparent framework for cooperation with third parties and provides guidelines on the sharing of economic benefits arising from the commercialization of IP.

The three-day course organized by KeNIA provides a foundation for designing and operationalizing an effective IP policy for institutions of higher learning and research centres.
